Op-eds
  • Marina Kaljurand - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia

Now more than ever the international community has a unique opportunity to make more decisive steps towards achieving gender equality. Not only have commitments to Beijing Platform of Action and UNSCR 1325 have been renewed recently in New York, but achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is one of the goals of the 2030 agenda.

  • Heimo Laakkonen - UNFPA Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Gender equality and women’s rights are key to addressing the unfinished business of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and accelerating global development beyond 2015. Gender equality matters in its own right, and as a prerequisite for the health and development of families and societies.

  • Marriët Schuurman - NATO Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security

Fifteen years ago, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on the importance of women’s participation in all areas of peace and security, including conflict prevention, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding. This milestone Resolution was the result of a realization that peace is inextricably linked with equality between men and women.

  • Salma Al-Nims – Secretary General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women

As the European Neighbourhood Policy countries seek to further their relation with the European Union, specific steps and actions taken towards ensuring human rights and gender equality become of high importance. Women still suffer from different forms of discrimination in most parts of the world and remain at risk of gender-based violence all over the world.
